Reception on the Occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia

On September 30, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the Republic of Cyprus hosted a reception on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia.

The reception was attended by five Ministers - members of the Government of Cyprus, including Minister of Education, Sport and Youth Dr Athena Michaelidou, Minister of Defence Mr Vasilis Palmas, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Mr Marinos Moushouttas, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Mrs Tina Pavlou, and Deputy Minister of Culture Mrs Clea Hadjistephanou-Papaellina.

The celebration brought together representatives of the Government and Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus, Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps, officials of the Armed Forces and Security Services, representatives of the Armenian Prelacy and community in Cyprus, as well as distinguished guests and friends of Armenia.

In her remarks, Ambassador Inna Torgomyan highlighted the significance of Armenia’s independence and the strong historical and contemporary ties between Armenia and Cyprus, noting that the two countries have developed a broad and friendly partnership since establishing diplomatic relations.

The Ambassador also reflected on the particularly active year for Armenia, highlighting the hosting of the 8th Summit of the European Political Community and the first EU–Armenia Summit in Yerevan, the third edition of the Yerevan Dialogue forum, the parliamentary elections held in June, and Armenia’s preparations to host COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan in October.
Touching upon the first year since the establishment of the Embassy of Armenia in Cyprus, the Ambassador highlighted the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the political, security, economic, educational, cultural and humanitarian spheres, as well as in tourism and decentralized cooperation. She also highlighted growing Armenia–EU engagement, high-level visits, and the signing of new agreements and memoranda of understanding in various fields.

Minister of Education, Sport and Youth Athena Michaelidou also addressed the guests, conveying congratulations on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus on the occasion of Armenia’s Independence Day and highlighting the close and friendly relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Torgomyan expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Cyprus, the Armenian community and the Diplomatic Corps for their friendship, support and cooperation. She wished Armenia peace, stability and prosperity, and expressed confidence that the friendship between Armenia and Cyprus would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
